A Sermon delivered on 19 July, 1970
In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The world around us is full of hatred and turmoil, and however close we may feel to one another, however much we perceive a momentary peace in our hearts, “how near we are always to a moment when peace breaks down, when tensions become stronger than our sense of oneness and when strife sets in. And at those moments we must learn something which is at the very core of our relationship with men and our relationship with God, we must learn to forgive. And we do not achieve it because we expect forgiveness to be at first what it can only be at last, the Joy of reconciliation, the Joy that is born from the discovery that darkness is conquered by light, that joy has set in where bitterness and sadness were. But this is not where forgiveness begins and it is not our victory, this is a gift of mercy both divine and human forgiveness which begins at the moment when offended, humiliated, betrayed, we can say in our hearts or aloud to the person who has done this whatever you have done, I love you enough to take on all the consequences of your frailty, all the consequences of the evil which is stronger than your good will, and I will bear these consequences because my love does not falter!
This is what God does to us; this is what absolution is when we receive it in the sacrament or penance, after our confession. Forgiveness is not given to us by God because we have already changed, neither does He forgive us because we shall change. We may change as a result of forgiveness if we only understand what it all means, but God does not wait until we have changed to forgive, otherwise no one would be forgiven. When we receive absolution, when we are granted forgiveness from God, it always means that God says: I know all the depth of your faults, I know all your betrayals, I know how far from Me you are, I know that your heart is grown cold and your mind darkened, I know that your will is not strong and yet, I witness before the whole of creation that My love does not falter, that My love remains whole, that it belongs to you unreservedly; it was My joy, it has become crucifixion. It was our common life, it has now become the moment when I am on the Cross and you have brought me to it; you have been shouting "crucify Him, crucify Him", you have been walking around this Cross saying "If Thou art the Son of God, come down from the Cross." You are responsible for it and yet my last word is: "Forgive, Father, he does not know what he is doing. Forgive Father, she does not know what she is doing."
And God takes upon Himself, by forgiving us, by witnessing that His love remains unshaken, He takes upon Himself final solidarity with us. He says to us: I called you into being, to share all My life, you have renounced it and reject it. Then I shall share all your life. I called you into eternity and bliss; you have opened up a depth of hell, I will walk into this hell. I will become man and share all the limitations, all the finitudes, all the cruelty of the human condition which you have created. I will share it to the last, to the very point where your betrayal means the loss of God, and the loss of life. “My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me" is the cry of Him who has willed to share with us everything, even our loss of God, because He wants to share all that is our life, because of love, and because of faith. Because not only does He love us, but He has faith in us, that all that won't be in vain.
That is forgiveness. That is the kind of forgiveness to which we are called each of us with regard to each other, indeed not to this extent, not to this depth and magnitude; but we are called to say: however cold your heart has become to me, mine is warm enough for both. We cannot share blessedness, I will share hell with you, and not only the hell which others have created for you, no, the very hell which is in your heart for me to live in. Unless we can say this, we cannot say that we begin our way to forgiveness. Oh, how much we wish to be able to say: the wounds which you have dealt on me are healed, the distress is over, peace, peace divine has come, but that comes after the agony of the Garden, it comes after the betrayal or the crucifixion, it comes after the death on the Cross, after the dereliction that kills, after three days when we lie numb and dead in the tomb. It comes when resurrection comes. Then we. who have forgiven, are risen in such a way that we can communicate life, life with abundance, life eternal, not before.
And so, here we are, in a life where nothing is unspoiled by tension, by strife, by coldness, by darkening, by hatred, by dividedness, here we are, given by God an example and indeed a challenge and an opportunity. Live in hell, walk into it. If you walk into it with a love that does not hesitate to die, then hell will cease to be hell. When Christ descended into hell, into the place where God is not, when He descended into it as a man who had accepted to lose God in order to remain with man, He brought into it the fullness of His Godhead and hell is no more the place where God is not. If it is anything, it is it is a place where we bewail our treason, our lovelessness, not a place from which God has turned away.
And what if we have no love, what if we cannot afford even this? If we have no love that will make us say "I will share with you dereliction, the Fall, hell, godlessness," then we must be prepared to say: I am like you, how can I judge you?" and humbly stay together where we are together helpless, broken, fearful, defeated, turning to God and saying "help us both, because we have both lost love, we have both lost life". How wonderful it is to be able at any moment to come to a God who can absolve, forgive, because He has chosen to be with us, while we refused or proved unable to be with Him, and what joy it is to think that we can even in our fault, even in our weakness do the same with each other, break down, explode hell, make it a place of redemption, of reconciliation, of life instead of death. Glory be to God for that He has revealed to us and for that He gives us power to recreate heaven where we have made hell. Amen!

ST. MOSES THE BLACK
(ca. 325 – ca. 400)
Feast Day: August 28th
St. Moses is a perfect example, like St. Mary of Egypt, that sometimes the greatest sinners can become the greatest saints, by means of deep and sincere repentance. Moses had been a murderer, a thief, and a very violent person. Therefore, St. Moses is a marvelous model for us of the power of repentance and of God’s forgiveness, especially for those who might feel that they are too sinful to be reconciled to God and His Holy Church, because they have strayed and fallen into sin. The “righteous” can be further from God than the sinner, because the “righteous,” like the pharisee and the elder son of Jesus’ parables, do not see their sins, and therefore are filled with pride instead of humility. In contrast, like Jesus’ prodigal son and tax-collector, the great sinner who repents can grow ever closer to God by means of his continued sincere repentance and consequent humility and self-abasement. St. Moses is just such a person.
St. Moses lived in Egypt during the fourth century. He was a very dark-skinned Ethiopian, and thus is also called St. Moses the Black. In his youth he was a slave of a high-ranking man, but after Moses committed a murder, his master banished him. Filled with much anger and bitterness, Moses joined a band of thieves who attacked, robbed and murdered travelers in the Egyptian desert. His band of brigands chose Moses as their leader because of his enormous physical strength and readiness to sin. People were afraid at the mere mention of his name.
After a number of years of this sinful life, by the grace of God, Moses repented, abandoned his band of robbers and went to one of the desert monasteries. He had to weep and beg for a long time before the brethren believed he was sincere, and finally they accepted him. He wept bitter tears of repentance for his sinful life, and became very obedient to the abbot, his spiritual father and confessor, Abba (Father) Isidore, a wise and experienced spiritual guide. After a while, Moses withdrew to a solitary cell, where he prayed, fasted, and continued to struggle against the passions and the violent attacks of demons, with the guidance of Abba Isidore, who taught him how to pray all night and to struggle against the demons. His long struggle with the passions and demons was necessary in order to become completely cleansed of his former sins. In his battle between the legions of demons and angels, Abba Isidore assured Moses that the angels would prevail.
One time four robbers of his former band attacked him in his solitary cell, not realizing who he was. Having lost none of his great physical strength, Moses tied them up, threw them over his shoulder, and brought them to the monastery, where the elders said to release them. Upon learning that this was Moses, their former gang-leader, and that he had dealt with them kindly, they followed his example, repented and also became monks. When the rest of the band of thieves learned what happened, they too abandoned their life of sin and became fervent monks.
Intensifying his spiritual efforts, St. Moses started carrying water every night from the well to each of the brothers, especially for the Elders who lived far from the well, and for whom it was difficult to carry water. Once, while leaning over the well, the demons took revenge for Moses’ victory over them, and delivered such a severe blow to Moses’ back, that he fell unconscious, and for an entire year he lay crippled in his cell. After this, he was healed and was freed from his passions, and received from the Lord power over demons.
As the years went on, and word about St. Moses spread, people started coming to see him, and Moses left his cell to hide from visitors. Along the way he met the servants of the local governor who were sent to find the saintly desert dweller. Moses told them, “go no further to see this false and unworthy monk.” When the servants returned to the governor at the monastery, they learned that they had encountered St. Moses himself.
After many years of monastic struggles, St. Moses was ordained deacon. In his humility, he believed himself unworthy of this office. Once, wishing to test him, the bishop told the clergy to insult and ridicule him as an unworthy Ethiopian, and to drive him out of the altar. The humble monk accepted the abuse. After this test, the bishop then ordained St. Moses as a priest. He was sixty years old at this time. For another fifteen years he continued his monastic labors, and about 75 disciples gathered around the saintly Elder, who had been granted by the Lord the gifts of wisdom, foresight, and power over demons. When he was 75, he warned his monks that soon brigands would attack their small monastery (skete) and murder everyone. He begged his monks to leave, but he himself refused to leave, because he believed the time had come for the Lord’s words to be fulfilled: “All who take up the sword shall perish by the sword” (Mt. 26:52). Seven brethren stayed with their Abba, one of whom hid when attacked, and lived to tell how the robbers killed St. Moses and the other six monks. It was about the year 400.

Our annual Fall Blanket Drive continues. We are half-way to our goal of 100 blankets for the poor and homeless, to be distributed primarily through RIR — we have donations for 50 blankets — only 50 more are needed. This year you don’t even have to go the store and buy blankets. Anna Margaret Costa will place an order at the Walmart with which she deals, where the manager is very sympathetic to our blankets-for-the-poor drive, and who made a big blanket donation last year. He asked Anna Margaret to let him know in August how many blankets to order, so he can make sure he gets in enough blankets. So please give your donation NOW for this order. Blankets are $5. We extend our hearty congratulations to Elizabeth Star and Larry Hatfield who were united in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony yesterday at St. Innocent Church. The presiding priest, of course, was her Dad, Fr. Roman. They are on their honeymoon this week. We wish the new couple many blessings in their married life together, and pray that God will preserve and protect them for MANY YEARS!

The drawing for the $4,000 prize of 20 Tigers baseball game seats in a deluxe private suite and buffet was held on August 12th. The chances of winning were 1 in 74. The winner is a member of Fr. John Fenton’s Holy Incarnation Church. Many thanks for all who bought a ticket or part of a ticket— your donation helps the COCC continue its Inter-Orthodox witness and charitable and educational work. Maybe next year?

We continue to thank for their on-going sacrificial labors in taking care of and beautifying our church property: John Andrayko & Fr. Roman who mowed, edged, and cleaned-up the lawn; and Matushka Rose Marie & Fr. Roman for their work in weeding, and general maintenance of the flower gardens. We always still desperately need some more volunteers to help maintain our beautiful church’s property. Please offer to come for a few hours and help. Thank you very much!

(8) NEXT MEETING OF MONTHLY POT-LUCK & DISCUSSION GROUP WILL BE SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st
Our monthly pot-luck lunch and discussion group that has been formed has met so far on June 22nd, July 13th and August 10th. It will continue to meet for a lively, thought-provoking discussion following a casual pot-luck lunch, on one Sunday (2nd or 3rd) a month after coffee hour, at the St. Innocent Religious Community. The fellowship, discussion and food are all most enjoyable and pleasant. The next gatherings will be on September 21st, October 19th, and November 9th. All are welcome. Mark your calendars.

They especially need volunteers on Sundays from 1 to 3:00 to serve meals to the needy at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Gilbert Street, near Livernois & Michigan, in Detroit. (11) ON-GOING CHARITABLE WORKS AT ST. INNOCENT
(1) Please continue to help the needy in our community by bringing in food, clothing, toiletries, household items, children’s toys, school supplies, etc., most of which is delivered to the REDFORD INTERFAITH RELIEF (RIR), a local organization run by Redford churches, of which St. Innocent is a very active member. They also welcome household, family & children’s items. (2) Also we continue, as always, to collect donations for the OCMC (Orthodox Christian Missions Center) CANISTER PROGRAM (to support mission priests). (The OCMC canister is by the candle stand.) (3) Please also continue to bring in your empty, clean pop cans and bottles, the refund from which we send to the ST. INNOCENT BOYS’ ORPHANAGE IN TIJUANA, MEXICO, as we have been doing for about 8-9 years. (4) And your USED EYE GLASSES are given to the Lions Club’s Eyes for the Needy program, and volunteers fix them up and distribute eyeglasses to the needy in 3rd- world countries.
(12) LATEST ISSUE OF THE COCC’S “GOOD WORKS” IS AVAILABLE
We still have a few copies left of the current issue (July–August) of “Good Works” — the highly successful newsletter of the Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Metro-Detroit (COCC). Look for it on the right end of the front pew, by the window, behind the current week’s Sunday bulletins. (If you would like a printed B&W copy mailed to you, please notify Sister Ioanna at sisterioanna@firebirdvideos.) The 16-page, 8½ x 11 publication has now changed from being published quarterly, to bi-monthly. Thus it will be published 6 times a year instead of 4 times. In a few weeks the September-October issue will be out. Make a point of getting your copy of eaach new issue each time it comes out, so you can enjoy reading the very diverse articles, news and announcements about the Orthodox community in southeast Michigan.
